A Pennsylvania woman was distraught after losing her $20,000 engagement ring during her bachelorette party on Fire Island, New York. The woman searched the house she was staying at and combed Atlantique Beach in Long Island but came up empty. She even enlisted the help of the police, who were unable to locate the missing diamond ring.

The woman had to return home to tell her fiancee that she lost the expensive engagement ring less than one week before her wedding.

Luckily, Officer Edmund McDowell wasn't ready to give up so easily. He went back to his house, grabbed his metal detector and returned to the beach. Within ten minutes, McDowell heard the distinct beeping that indicated he had found some metal buried in the sand. After digging up a dime, a quarter, and rusty screw, he finally uncovered the round-cut diamond ring.

One of the friends of the bride-to-be stayed behind to help with the search and drove the engagement ring back to the relieved woman in Pennsylvania.

This is the second time that McDowell has used his metal detector to find missing, and expensive, jewelry. Eight years ago he helped a man locate his $30,000 platinum and diamond wedding band after he lost it while playing beach volleyball.
